Meet Dr. Licht

Dr. Joseph Licht, DO is a fellowship-trained, board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in oculoplastic and advanced cataract surgery. His training allows him to serve patients using the latest technology in areas of high demand within eyecare.

Dr. Licht's aspirations began at the University of Florida, where he studied linguistics and mathematics and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. After three years teaching high school math, he returned to UF, earned an MS in environmental engineering, and decided on a path in medicine.

He then attended Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning his doctorate, and continued there for his ophthalmology residency. Dr. Licht completed additional training in global eyecare and oculofacial plastic surgery as a dual fellow at Emory University and the National Institutes of Health.

During this time, he spent the better part of a year in Ethiopia researching previously unexplored aspects of trachoma, as well as learning advanced surgical techniques.

Dr. Licht joins St. Luke's at The Villages after three years at the VA treating our nation's veterans. A native of Ocala, he now brings his skillset back to central Florida with the goal of making meaningful and innovative contributions in his home community.

Oculoplastic Procedures

There are many oculoplastic procedures that can offer effective solutions to combat the signs of aging around the eyes. Additionally, oculoplastics surgery can address specific conditions that may arise due to age to improve the function and the cosmetic appearance of the eyelids.

Blepharoplasty
Also known as eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty aims to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle. This procedure can help eliminate puffiness and drooping, giving the eyes a more youthful and refreshed look.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids. For the upper eyelids, the procedure can enhance the contour of the eye and remove any excess skin or fat that may cause drooping.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty, on the other hand, targets under-eye bags and sagging skin.
Ptosis Repair
Ptosis refers to drooping of the upper eyelid, often due to an issue involving the muscle that lifts the eyelid, which can sometimes obstruct vision. Ptosis repair involves lifting the eyelid to restore a more natural and functional position.
Unlike blepharoplasty, which primarily deals with excess skin and fat, ptosis repair focuses on repositioning the weakened muscle to elevate the eyelid. By restoring a balanced and functional eyelid position, ptosis repair aims to enhance visual clarity and the overall appearance of the eye.
Entropion Repair
Entropion is when the eyelid turns inwards, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye. This can make your eye feel uncomfortable, irritated, and, in more serious cases, even hurt the transparent front part of your eye, called the cornea.
To correct this, oculoplastic surgeons can perform a procedure to adjust the eyelid's position and prevent it from turning inwards.
Ectropion Repair
On the other hand, ectropion is when the eyelid turns outward, making the inner part of the eye more exposed. This can lead to your eye feeling dry, watery, and irritated.
To repair ectropion, oculoplastics surgeons tighten or reposition the muscles and tissues around the eyelid during a procedure. This helps the eyelid rest properly against your eye, so you feel better, and your eye is more comfortable.
Brow Lift
A brow lift is a procedure designed to raise and rejuvenate the position of the eyebrows and forehead. It's often performed to correct sagging brows and deep forehead wrinkles that can make a person appear tired, angry, or older than they are.
The main goal of a brow lift is to reposition the brows to a more youthful and natural position, creating a refreshed appearance.
